Andrew J Daw, President, INCOSE UK Chapter

Background:

The value of a systems engineering approach is increasingly recognised in a wide range of application areas. These areas include defence, aerospace, IT systems, high-tech products, complex infrastructure and the big issues facing society, such as climate change. As organisations prepare to face these challenges there is a growing demand in the UK and worldwide for formal recognition of professional skills, experience and competence in systems engineering

In response to this worldwide demand, INCOSE, (the International Council on Systems Engineering), is developing a scheme to provide formal recognition of systems engineering professionalism at a number of levels, from associate to expert.

The question for the UK is; “can we make use of this scheme, and how well does it fit with our own mechanisms for registration and chartership?” The UK Chapter of INCOSE has arranged a workshop involving a number of institutions, including the Engineering Council, the IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology) and the IMC (Institute of Measurement and Control), hosted by the Royal Academy of Engineering, to present these plans and discuss whether, and if so how, the INCOSE “Systems Engineering Professional” scheme could contribute to recognition of professional skills in systems engineering in the UK. In particular there is an opportunity to influence the “Expert” level of the scheme so that it will best meet UK needs.

The workshop will take place on the 16th of May. At dinner on the evening of the 15th the workshop participants will outline their view of the opportunities and issues to be resolved, inviting feedback, to an audience of invited guests and members of the participating institutions.

6 x 5 minutes of Introduction (see below), followed by table discussions over dinner. Over coffee the audience will be invited to give feedback on their reactions to presentations and on their “requirements”.
