There is a common perception that a conflict exists between weapon system integrity and interoperability. Is this true or are there opportunities for ensuring that surety and risks can be balanced to achieve interoperability? Areas where this is a major issue include ISTAR, Directed Energy Weapons, and Spacebased Systems.

In order to address this question, a one-day unclassified conference is being organised by the Royal Aeronautical Society's Weapon Systems and Technology Group in conjunction with QinetiQ at Boscombe Down. Papers are invited to discuss the issues associated with balancing these apparently divergent requirements.

Abstracts of 200 - 500 words typed and double spaced on A4 paper should be submitted by Friday 3rd July 2009.

The Crawford Collection of books and manuscripts at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, one of the most extensive and valuable astronomical libraries in the world, was the gift of James Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford (formerly Lord Lindsay) in 1888. Lindsay was a distinguished amateur astronomer who set up a private observatory on the family’s country estate at Dun Echt, Aberdeenshire, in the north of Scotland, in 1872. He appointed David Gill (later Sir David, Her Majesty’s Astronomer at the Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope) as Director, with whose help he furnished it with a set of astronomical instruments from the best opticians in Europe. Inspired by his father, the 25th Earl of Crawford, a leading bibliophile and book collector, Lord Lindsay also assembled at Dun Echt a magnificent library of astronomical books and manuscripts.

The INCOSE UK Rail Interest Group (RIG) is proud to be working with the IET to put on a one-day seminar at the IET's premises in Savoy Place, London on 11th November 2009 in 'Systems Engineering in Railways'.

The seminar, delivered by senior figures within the rail industry, will illustrate the manner in which systems engineering techniques are becoming increasingly essential for modern railway engineers. Subtitled ‘Making it work for you’, the seminar will be of value to anyone needing to understand the benefits of systems engineering techniques in a railway environment as well as providing an opportunity for systems engineers to explore the current state of the art in rail systems engineering.

There is an optional ,pre-seminar tutorial to ensure that the seminar is fully accessible to the non-expert so, after you have taken a look yourself, please consider passing the details on to any colleagues who might benefit from a better appreciation of systems engineering in railways.

Approaching New Horizons in a Systems World

The INCOSE UK 2009 Autumn Assembly will focus on the role of Systems Engineering in an increasingly “Systems World”, with sessions on:

• Demystifying some of the current initiatives which are addressing systems problems
• Introducing powerful techniques we can use to work together on systems problems
• Revisiting some of the fundamentals of Systems Engineering and looking at how they deal with the issues of the modern systems world

The event has something for both Experienced Systems Professionals who want to understand better how Systems Engineering fits into an integrated approach, and those new to Systems Engineering who want to learn about new techniques, or understand some of the fundamentals and how to apply them.
