How not to do Systems Engineering
Until now, Rail Interest Group events have been designed to serve positive systems engineers who are working hard to make their project a success. We are now pleased to provide an event for the community of project saboteurs. In the informal environment of the function room at the Duke of York pub in Fitzrovia, a number of experienced systems engineers will describe their favoured systems-related method of bringing a project to its knees. There will then be an opportunity for members to describe their own preferred methods and a discussion on which is most effective. The event will finish at 1830H but informal discussions may continue over a drink or two.

"Systems Engineering and the UK Transport System"
Duncan Kemp, the lead systems engineer for rail in the Department for Transport, will discuss the role of systems engineering in DfT. Duncan will outline the systems engineering challenges that the DfT is facing and some of the approaches they are using to ensure a whole of life, whole systems approach to rail.

Royal Aeronautical Society's Weapon System Integrity vs Interoperability Conference

There is a common perception that a conflict exists between weapon system integrity and interoperability. Is this true or are there opportunities for ensuring that surety and risks can be balanced to achieve interoperability? Areas where this is a major issue include ISTAR, Directed Energy Weapons, and Spacebased Systems.

In order to address this question, a one-day unclassified conference is being organised by the Royal Aeronautical Society's Weapon Systems and Technology Group in conjunction with QinetiQ at Boscombe Down. Papers are invited to discuss the issues associated with balancing these apparently divergent requirements.

Abstracts of 200 - 500 words typed and double spaced on A4 paper should be submitted by Friday 3rd July 2009.

Managing Complex Programmes: Integrating Systems Thinking and Technology Management
The programme approach to Capability Delivery is beginning to highlight the benefits of a through-life and, crucially, across DLoDs approach to managing the delivery of battle-winning capability in an evolving threat environment. Taking a programme-level view of risks and opportunities helps identify options for meeting requirements which would not otherwise be considered and, eventually, balancing those requirements within available resources. Speakers Include: Andrew Tyler, DE&S COO Ivor Bennett, BMT Hi-Q Sigma Paul Chivers, MCSQUARED Consultants Ltd Ed Hoffman, NASA Academy of Program and Project Leadership Discussion Panel: Maj Gen Alan Macklin (Director MoD Programmes and Technology Group) Howard Mathers (Director DE&S Safety and Engineering) Dr Chris Mace (Director MoD Science and Technology Operations) Andrew Browne (Vice President, C4I Systems General Dynamics UK Ltd) To attend you must book.

Simple Systems Techniques That Work
Back in the days before we all had computers on our desks, and fancy modelling and analysis tools to use on them, we used to get an awful lot done with a pen and some bits of paper. Some of these simple techniques can produce surprisingly powerful results when applied correctly, and it is the aim of this interactive one-day event to give delegates the opportunity to try some of them out. Every delegate will receive expert tuition and a walk-through of each method, before trying them out on our sample problem...

Nimrod and the MoD: missed opportunities and lessons for rail
Nigel Murphy, Technical Director of Atkins Rail Systems Consultancy, will be relating the findings from a recent review conducted for the DfT. This examined transferable lessons from experience in the defence sector, including the recent Nimrod inquiry, for the management of safety and integrity and for the delivery of major complex programmes in rail. The current economic background poses challenges for the rail sector and these have implications for the effective delivery of rail's investment portfolio. Furthermore, increasingly aged legacy systems in rail generate real challenges for the systems engineer. Atkins' team on this review comprised a cross section of defence, rail and systems specialists as well as transport economics and planning professionals. It promises to be a stimulating and indeed thoughprovoking insight into how we might learn from failure and the sacrifice of others.

Viewing of the Crawford Collection:

The Crawford Collection of books and manuscripts at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, one of the most extensive and valuable astronomical libraries in the world, was the gift of James Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford (formerly Lord Lindsay) in 1888. Lindsay was a distinguished amateur astronomer who set up a private observatory on the family’s country estate at Dun Echt, Aberdeenshire, in the north of Scotland, in 1872. He appointed David Gill (later Sir David, Her Majesty’s Astronomer at the Royal Observatory at the Cape of Good Hope) as Director, with whose help he furnished it with a set of astronomical instruments from the best opticians in Europe. Inspired by his father, the 25th Earl of Crawford, a leading bibliophile and book collector, Lord Lindsay also assembled at Dun Echt a magnificent library of astronomical books and manuscripts.

Only 10 places are available.

Systems Engineering in Different Domains
Does the manner in which systems engineering is carried out depend entirely upon the context in which it is done, or are there some universal principles which will always apply? This interactive workshop event will seek to tease out what the differences are in the practice of systems engineering across different domains, assess why they have come about, and see whether anything can be learned from the transfer of knowledge.

Development of Sustainable Systems
Change is often the key driver behind systems engineering projects, but what about all of those undesirable and unwelcome changes? This event will look at systems from a sustainability point of view, both for the systems themselves, and for the environments (in the widest sense) within which they operate.

Systems Engineering in Railways

The INCOSE UK Rail Interest Group (RIG) is proud to be working with the IET to put on a one-day seminar at the IET's premises in Savoy Place, London on 11th November 2009 in 'Systems Engineering in Railways'.

The seminar, delivered by senior figures within the rail industry, will illustrate the manner in which systems engineering techniques are becoming increasingly essential for modern railway engineers. Subtitled ‘Making it work for you’, the seminar will be of value to anyone needing to understand the benefits of systems engineering techniques in a railway environment as well as providing an opportunity for systems engineers to explore the current state of the art in rail systems engineering.

There is an optional ,pre-seminar tutorial to ensure that the seminar is fully accessible to the non-expert so, after you have taken a look yourself, please consider passing the details on to any colleagues who might benefit from a better appreciation of systems engineering in railways.

The programme is available at http://www.theiet.org/events/2009/systems-engineering-prog-280909.pdf and more general details are on the IET web-site at http://www.theiet.org/events/2009/railway-systems.cfm. You will also find details of how to book your place at the seminar on this page. Please note that you cannot book for this event via INCOSE UK - the IET is handling all bookings. If you cannot find the answer to your question on one of these web pages, please contact the RIG Chair, Bruce Elliott on bruce.elliott@arbutus-tc.co.uk

Autumn Assembly 2009 (AA09)

Approaching New Horizons in a Systems World

The INCOSE UK 2009 Autumn Assembly will focus on the role of Systems Engineering in an increasingly “Systems World”, with sessions on:

  • Demystifying some of the current initiatives which are addressing systems problems
  • Introducing powerful techniques we can use to work together on systems problems
  • Revisiting some of the fundamentals of Systems Engineering and looking at how they deal with the issues of the modern systems world

The event has something for both Experienced Systems Professionals who want to understand better how Systems Engineering fits into an integrated approach, and those new to Systems Engineering who want to learn about new techniques, or understand some of the fundamentals and how to apply them.
