A year (and a bit) in the life of MODAF

MODAF has been with us officially since September 2005, and many of us will have encountered it in some manner as part of our day-to-day work. This event will attempt to demystify some of the more capability based views, which may be unfamiliar to design oriented engineers, by providing a worked example of how MODAF has been used to assist in analysing a “Search and Rescue” capability.

Keeping the Floor Level on the New Underground

As part of the Public Private Partnership with LUL, Metronet are modernising the sub-surface lines comprising Metropolitan, Hammersmith and City and District Lines. The Mayor of London has an aspiration to have a modern metro which is inclusive and accessible for all. Metronet have committed to support LUL in developing a step-free railway. Metronet’s contribution is to design and build a train and platform train interface that complies with Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations and the notion of a level access at the train doors.

Requirements Elicitation Techniques

In a slight departure from our normal events, this event will be split into two linked elements. The afternoon session will be a Workshop based tutorial. Delegates will make use of a range of requirements elicitation techniques to produce a short requirements document for a pre-prepared topical problem. Experienced practitioners will provide guidance on the application of each of the elicitation techniques, and mentor the delegates during the workshop. Stakeholder roles will be played by the committee.

Simulation and operational analysis

Whether it is a full blown flight simulator, a wooden mock-up, or a humble spreadsheet crunching representative numbers, some form of simulation or operational analysis should be an important tool in the systems engineer’s toolbox (and it’s often more fun than requirements). This event will feature invited speakers explaining how they have used various simulation and operational analysis techniques to feed insights back into the systems engineering process.

What is a systems engineer, and how do we make them?

Are systems engineers born or can it be taught, and what is a systems engineer anyway? This interactive workshop based event will give you the chance to air your views and join the nature vs. nurture debate as we seek to establish the requirements for a systems engineer, how these requirements could be met, and how to verify that systems engineering is being done.

Decommission, Dismantle, Demolish, and Dispose of

As well as the fun of building new things, Systems Engineering also includes getting rid of old ones. This is nowhere more relevant than in the Nuclear Power industry where early reactors have now reached the end of their operational phase. This now-or-never event is a guided tour of Hinkley ‘A’ nuclear power station, which is being dismantled, plus a presentation and discussion on decommissioning

Network Rail - Towards a Total System Approach

Advanced technology train control systems represent a cost-effective means of improving the level of service offered to transit passengers in terms of safety, dependability and comfort, while providing increased capacity and reduced travel times on an existing transportation infrastructure. A number of rail transit agencies around the world have implemented, or are in the process of implementing, such systems and, while a number of these projects have been very successful, others have encountered significant schedule and budget overruns.

A380 – Stopping the Giant

What goes up not only has to come down, but also needs to be brought safely to rest! For this event we are fortunate enough to have Ian Barnes, Head of Engineering for A380 Landing Gear, who will take us through a series of systems engineering threads highlighting issues encountered with the landing gear development, and putting them into a whole system context. This event will provide a unique insight into the challenges faced on a multi-national, multi-site commercial systems engineering programme.
