2013 Tutorial Day

INCOSE UK tutorial days provide an opportunity to extend or reinforce your Systems Engineering skills by learning from acknowledged experts. This year we have deliberately focussed on subjects that are of practical use in the SE workplace.
These include topics that are part of established SE processes and techniques to add to your SE ‘tool-box’. Here is some of the feedback from last year’s delegates:
  • “Good practical demonstration of topic through targeted appropriate exercises.”
  • “All training objectives were met. Very, very useful and allows me to now research further those areas that are particularly of interest or where I need more depth.”
  • “Excellent content extremely relevant and appropriate level of delivery.”
We are offering a choice of four full day tutorials that explore a range of Systems Engineering topics. At least 6 registrants are required for a tutorial to be run and there is a maximum of 15 places on each tutorial. You are recommended to book early to secure a place on your chosen tutorial.

Keeping London Moving During the London 2012 Games

Having seen how well London's tube, DLR, buses, trams and so on functioned as a joined-up system during last Summer's Games, I have been hugely curious to know to what extent that success was the product of good systems thinking and to what extent it was the product of good thinking of other varieties. I am therefore truly delighted that Mark Evers, who was TfL's Director of Games Transport at the time, has agreed to talk to us. Mark will speak on the topic of Keeping London Moving During the London 2012 Games at Network Rail's offices in 1 Eversholt Street, Euston at 1730H on Tuesday, 16th July 2013. You will find a few more details in the attached flyer.

The illusion of Model Based System Engineering

This presentation looks at the realities of implementing MBSE in terms of ‘people, process and tools’ and suggests that any single one of these is simply not enough. We need effective processes to demonstrate capability, but we also need appropriately competent people and sharp tools to realise these processes successfully.

A Strategic Research Agenda for Systems of Systems Engineering (SoSE) By Dr. Huseyin Dogan

The large-scale complex Systems of Systems (SoS) are there to improve the provision of societal services. These are driven by global drivers such as population growth, aging, food security, energy security and climate change. However, a considerable number of SoS projects resulted in failures, causing detrimental economic impact.

This aim of this talk is to presents a set of results from an European Commission (EC) funded project called T-AREA-SoS (Trans-Atlantic Research and Education Agenda on Systems of Systems). T-AREA-SoS is part of a cluster of four Systems of Systems Engineering (SoSE) collaborative projects funded by the EC contributing to the Strategic Research Agenda.

This is a joint meeting with Dorset BCS.

Attendees need to report to the Pool House reception. The directions to the Talbot Campus and a campus map showing the location of Pool House are provided on the following web pages. Parking is free.

Service Systems Engineering - NEW WORKING GROUP - CALLING NOTICE

This was introduced by the INCOSE UK Technical Director Andrew Farncombe (see agenda below), and followed by six ‘think pieces’ (below) on various topics, intended to stimulate discussion and provide some structure to the remainder of the session. The attendees were then divided into three breakout groups and invited to provide feedback by answering five questions on the working group, its activities and its members. This feedback was then presented to the other breakout groups, followed by Q&A and a general discussion/wrap up.

The inaugural meeting of the Enterprise Systems Engineering Interest Group

Using Multiple Perspectives to Design Resilient Systems for Agile Enterprises

by Jeremy Hilton, Cranfield University

This paper proposes an approach to improve the resilience of systems in the design stage by considering a framework of resilience to inform the system’s requirements. We suggest that, in addition, one should consider the regulatory needs, not only of the system, but also the management of the engineering and project/program management processes. Finally we propose a link between the unstructured problem space and the structured engineering and project management space through the consideration of multiple dimensions of the system’s needs.

Since this is the inaugural meeting, some time will also be allocated to reviewing the aims of the Interest Group and gathering views from those attending on topics for future sessions.

Light refreshment will be provided.

Please note that if you wish to attend you must book by close of play on Friday 10th May, to to allow names to be given to the venue prior to the event.  Please bring some form of identity, such as photographic driving licence or passport to show at reception. The event is free to attend.

Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)

Steve Lilleyman, Purple Secure Systems.

MBSE offers plenty of promise, tempting architects and system designers with opportunities to improve quality at reduced cost through a rigorous methodology and the possibility of reuse. In reality, it can be difficult to know how to apply this modern paradigm to organisations that have long established ways of working with more traditional approaches to product development.

This presentation addresses these issues by identifying common problems faced by a range of projects of different types, as experienced by systems engineering consultants working both in the defence industry and in other public and private ventures, and sets out some ways to apply the model based paradigm to good effect.

Note: INCOSE UK South Coast Meetings are open to both INCOSE members and non-members at no cost.

The 4th IET Safety Assessment: Human factors issues for safe systems

Website:http://conferences.theiet.org/safety-assessments/.

About the seminar:

Increasingly, human factors issues are being considered fundamental to ensuring the integrity of safe systems. This seminar will bring human factors centre-stage from the periphery of engineering safety-critical systems by illustrating how they should be included within a good safety management system, examined in a similar way to any other risk control system. Seminar presentations from human factors experts working in a selection of industries will demonstrate how human factors issues can be mitigated to ensure safe systems.

IET would be delighted to extend to INCOSE members the special IET Member booking rate, please use this link to book and secure the special rate http://conferences.theiet.org/safety-assessments/index.cfm?origin=INCOSE
