The tool vendors response to Architectural Frameworks

In June, Bristol Local Group held the first of two meetings on Architectural Frameworks in general and MoDAF in particular, with contributions from MoD and academia.  This, the second meeting, was the tool vendors’ turn to put their point of view.  Forty-six people were present to hear three excellent speakers giving their diverse views.

Systems Engineering - the UK perspective

The UK makes a significant contribution to the latest thinking in Systems Engineering as evidenced by the prize winning papers accepted for the INCOSE International Symposium of 2005. This event will provide a preview of four UK papers that have been accepted for either the INCOSE International Symposium 2006, or the Conference on Systems Engineering Research 2006:

A380 – Stopping the Giant

What goes up not only has to come down, but also needs to be brought safely to rest! For this event we are fortunate enough to have Ian Barnes, Head of Engineering for A380 Landing Gear, who will take us through a series of systems engineering threads highlighting issues encountered with the landing gear development, and putting them into a whole system context. This event will provide a unique insight into the challenges faced on a multi-national, multi-site commercial systems engineering programme.

Network Rail - Towards a Total System Approach

Advanced technology train control systems represent a cost-effective means of improving the level of service offered to transit passengers in terms of safety, dependability and comfort, while providing increased capacity and reduced travel times on an existing transportation infrastructure. A number of rail transit agencies around the world have implemented, or are in the process of implementing, such systems and, while a number of these projects have been very successful, others have encountered significant schedule and budget overruns.

AGM and Architectural Frameworks - How MoDAF will change my Life

MOD Architectural Framework (MODAF) is being developed as a critical enabler of Network Enabled Capability, which enables improved interoperability and should realise significant cost avoidance benefits through improved efficiency of the MOD acquisition processes and reduction in the amount of rework required to deliver interoperability and integration.

What is Most Important to System Design Success: Models, Design Documents, Process or Something Else?

The aim is to consider the pros and cons of a proposed model built from design documents of systems engineering design, into which process is integrated. The model, to be presented by George Caple, consists of a Department of Defense Architecture Framework and an ANSI/AIAA G-043 Proposed Operational Concept Document. This model is directly related to the published work of Peter Checkland (Soft Systems), and James Martin (Aerospace).

Spring Symposium 2002 - "Triple SE - Safe and Secure Systems Engineering"

Since the terrible events of 11 Sep 01, the world has faced a much more uncertain future. Routine travel throughout the world by air, which has hitherto been taken for granted, has become a major source of concern. This has not only caused a major re-assessment of the security and safety of air travel, but the certainties surrounding many other aspects of our ever-more interconnected life have been called into question. A number of recent public inquiries into major incidents have referred to a failure of systems as a prime contributory factor.

In getting to the root of these kinds of issues we need to take into account all dimensions of the problem – people, both operators and customers, technology, organisation, environment etc – in other words, the kind of holistic approach that Systems Engineering is well placed to provide. The Spring Symposium for 2002 will therefore have as its theme “Triple SE” – Safe and Secure Systems Engineering.
