Systems Engineering: Railway Operators get it too!

Systems Engineering techniques are increasingly applied with success in rail engineering design. Rail operating professionals, seeing the advantages, have grasped the essentials with alacrity.

Nigel Murphy and Steve Roberts set out some examples of such applications, illustrating how time, cost and risk have been reduced and performance and operability improved, in ‘softer’ operational design of the rules, methods of working and competence management systems necessary to deliver the railway for customers. They will draw upon examples over the last 12 years in the UK, and reference global examples for further illustration. They will argue that SE practitioners should view railway operations professionals as advocates, champions and co-practitioners and that System Engineering must embrace operational design in a systematic way rather than as an afterthought. The presentation will show that use of SE approaches by operators is a successful model for others to adopt and provoke debate on practical steps that SE practitioners should consider when developing new projects.

Rail Interest Group AGM to be followed by The State of (Rail) Systems Engineering

There was a considerable rail contingent at the INCOSE international symposium in Rome in July 2012, including several RIG members. Rhianne, David and Bruce will present some considered reflections on the event. It won’t be a trip report. Instead they will analyse their experience to propose conclusions about:

  • Where SE is, in the rail sector and more generally;
  • Where it seems to be going; and
  • What this means for those interested in embedding SE ideas within rail organisations.

Audience participation will be encouraged so that we can pool our experience and form the most accurate picture of the state of rail SE. The conclusions will be refined in the light of contributions from the floor.

The Cyber Test Range: modelling large scale network/system architectures

In October 2010 using technology transferred from its operations in the United States, Northrop Grumman opened the UK’s first commercially available cyber test range at its facility in Fareham. Up to that point the concept of the cyber test range to accurately model large scale network/system architectures was relatively new outside of the US. Since that time, the Fareham range has been used to create a wide variety of novel test environments – not always ‘cyber’ related. The evening will provide an informative introduction into the system engineering processes involved in using cyber test ranges. This will include a tour of the Fareham cyber test range facility, a leading example of its type.

CREATING THE ULTIMATE SPORTS ENVIRONMENT: Integral Planning and Co-ordination for Team GB at Loughborough University

In the lead up to the Olympics, Loughborough University hosted Team GB for their preparaton for what turned out to be a hugely successful campaign and a record medal haul. This involved 550 athletes, 450 coaches and 300 volunteers passing through the campus for a series of events including sports training camps, media days, Olympic torch relay and the kitting out of the whole team.

Deep Left Shift – SE and the Future Tube Upgrades

London Underground has already engaged in significant upgrades to the Victoria Line, Jubilee Line and the Sub-surface Lines, which commenced under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreements. Work does not stop there however and LU is now exploring programmes for possible upgrades of other deep tube lines; an opportunity for ‘left shifting’ and engaging system engineering right at the front of the lifecycle according to all the text books and SE protagonists.

Those deep tube lines yet to undergo a major upgrade (the Bakerloo, Piccadilly and Northern Lines, and, later, the Central Line) offer a variety of unique challenges. The desire for ever increasing levels of capacity, reliability and automation beyond anything ever undertaken on any previous line upgrade, within the constraints of topography, heat and the need for continuous service operation, makes it paramount to get the system design (assets, processes and people) right.......

Annual Systems Engineering Conference 2012 (ASEC2012)

INCOSE UK’s Annual Systems Engineering Conference (ASEC2012) will offer two days of presentations, tutorials and workshops. Our theme is “Building a Better Future” which was chosen to appeal to all of the industries and domains represented by our members. The theme also encourages a focus on how Systems Engineering and Systems Thinking can be used to underpin the future success of organisations and the projects that they deliver.

Experience of System Engineering in Rolling Stock Development (A Manufacturer’s View)

Bombardier has been employing System Engineering techniques for a number of years to bring improvements in the integrity of the design and ensure timely product approval.

This has been undertaken in an industry environment where customer needs and the regulatory framework have been subject to significant changes. This presentation will focus on some of SE techniques employed and challenges faced in their implementation. Charles and Paul will describe their practical experience of:

  • Performing SE within short product design and build cycles
  • Managing stakeholders: Customers, Infrastructure Managers, Regulators
  • Implementing Requirement Management techniques

What can we learn from the IT Sector?

Systems Engineering concepts are mature, well-established and implemented in many organisations. Many of these concepts are in use in other areas of engineering including IT. However, IT has a much larger community and a larger direct market place than Systems Engineering and has advanced quicker and further in its concepts, standards and implementations than ‘Good Old Systems Engineering’. This talk will look at three areas of IT: Cloud Computing, Interface Evolution and IT Capability and see what lessons we could learn for further developing the discipline.

Nuclear Power - how can a systems approach help?

This event will explore the interface between civil nuclear power & system engineering in an “Any Questions?” style format with a panel of three speakers representing some of the different perspectives on system engineering and nuclear power, with panellists expected from the Office of the Nuclear Regulator, EDF Energy and the SE research community (in the shape of Paul Davies, visiting professor to Loughborough University, Head of Innovation at Thales, and past INCOSE UK President). In order to make this event format effective, we are keen to solicit questions from the audience in advance. Suggested questions should be sent by email to Colin Brain at cjb@sevalidation.com before the 9th May to allow the panellists the opportunity to prepare their responses. Such questions could be along the lines of “Are the major system risks and assumptions different for nuclear power?”, or “What is 'Plan B' if there are too few engineers to support future nuclear aspirations?”
